I have a postcard on my bulletin board that says, “Let’s make time for all the things we want to do.”
But making time can be hard.
One of the things I love about where I work is the flexible schedule. The cable guy is going to fix my signal between 8am and 8pm on Tuesday? No problem. But sometimes, working from home and flexing my schedule just isn’t enough. I need honest-to-goodness time off to check things off of my personal to-do list (that includes things I want and need to do).
And that’s exactly what I did last week. After a hectic several months, I took advantage of a lighter week to put up an out of office message and tackle some non-work-related business. Business like:
- Gardening — two raised beds with veggies, plus some wildflowers and grass
- Painting — a piece that was requested a long time ago!
- Dancing — a great hip hop class at Ninth Street Dance
- Strolling with the hound
- Feeding baby goats — at the beautiful Wild Scallions Farm
- Hunting for Easter eggs — a contact sport
- Watching TV and movies
- Shopping — how I really love to unwind
- Going to class
- Doing homework –LOTS of it
- Working — let’s face it: sometimes it’s easier to reply to a few emails and take a few phone calls than worry about them until you get back
- Taking care of my belongings — namely, getting my car tuned up and organizing the house a little bit
- Taking care of myself — making appointments, relaxing
Now that my week away from the office is over, I’m feeling good! I checked nearly everything off my to-do list, and I don’t feeling like I worked too hard or not hard enough. When it was time to head back to work, I felt both accomplished and refreshed.
